The gut-brain connection 

Have you ever had a “gut-wrenching” experience? Do certain situations make you “feel nauseous”? Have you ever felt “butterflies” in your stomach? We use these expressions for a reason. The gastrointestinal tract is sensitive to emotion. Anger, anxiety, sadness, elation — all of these feelings (and others) can trigger symptoms in the gut.
The brain has a direct effect on the stomach. For example, the very thought of eating can release the stomach’s juices before food gets there. This connection goes both ways. A troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just as a troubled brain can send signals to the gut. Therefore, a person’s stomach or intestinal distress can be the cause or the product of anxiety, stress, or depression. That’s because the brain and the gastrointestinal (GI) system are intimately connected — so intimately that they should be viewed as one system.
This is especially true in cases where a person experiences gastrointestinal upset with no obvious physical cause. For such functional GI disorders, it is difficult to try to heal a distressed gut without considering the role of stress and emotion..

Stress and the functional GI disorders

Given how closely the gut and brain interact, it becomes easier to understand why you might feel nauseated before giving a presentation, or feel intestinal pain during times of stress. That doesn’t mean, however, that functional gastrointestinal illnesses are imagined or “all in your head.” Psychology combines with physical factors to cause pain and other bowel symptoms. Psychosocial factors influence the actual physiology of the gut, as well as symptoms. In other words, stress (or depression or other psychological factors) can affect movement and contractions of the GI tract, cause inflammation, or make you more susceptible to infection.
In addition, research suggests that some people with functional GI disorders perceive pain more acutely than other people do because their brains do not properly regulate pain signals from the GI tract. Stress can make the existing pain seem even worse.
Based on these observations, you might expect that at least some patients with functional GI conditions might improve with therapy to reduce stress or treat anxiety or depression. And sure enough, a review of 13 studies showed that patients who tried psychologically based approaches had greater improvement in their digestive symptoms compared with patients who received conventional medical treatment.

Together you can come up with strategies to help you deal with the stressors in your life, and also ease your digestive discomforts.

Physical symptoms

  • Stiff or tense muscles, especially in the neck and shoulders

  • Shakiness or tremors
  • Recent loss of interest in sex
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Restlessness

Behavioral symptoms

  • Procrastination
  • Grinding teeth
  • Difficulty completing work assignments
  • Changes in the amount of alcohol or food you consume
  • Taking up smoking, or smoking more than usual
  • Increased desire to be with or withdraw from others
  • Rumination (frequent talking or brooding about stressful situations)

Emotional symptoms

  • Crying
  • Overwhelming sense of tension or pressure
  • Trouble relaxing
  • Nervousness
  • Quick temper
  • Depression
  • Poor concentration
  • Trouble remembering things
  • Loss of sense of humor
  • Indecisiveness

What To Avoid When Detoxing

Food to avoid during A Detox Diet
When you are detoxing and preparing for colonic irrigation, it is so important to avoid certain foods as they will add toxification quickly to your system. The idea is to give your body a break as you undergo colonic irrigation.
White Refined Flour
“The whiter your bread the quicker you’re dead”. Refined white flour is similar to sugar actually as when broken down by the body it forms simple sugars and spikes insulin levels. We have been brain washed into thinking that milk is so important for our health, but did you know you get more calcium from seeds, nuts and beans than you do from milk!? Another negative is that cows are fed many antibiotics and growth hormones that get re-concentrated into the milk that we drink!Coffee Sorry all you coffee addicts out there! Coffee aids in cell water retention – not great for cellulite! It also is known to be high in pesticides (so use an organic one if absolutely necessary!) but can also interfere with
insulin control, increase the chance of strokes, raise cholesterol, and increase the risk of heart disease! Its possible to actually see mucous from dairy products as they leave the colon during colonic irrigation.
Artificial Sweeteners
Present in so many food products today! Normally found in diet cereals and soft drinks, low fat products and yoghurts. Critics actually say this chemical could have been a banned substance if on the board for approval today! It is a poison! Some symptoms cause headaches / migraines, nausea, depression, insomnia, memory loss, anxiety attacks, fatigue, irritability, weight gain (it increases ones appetite).
Soft Drinks
They have approximately 7 – 10 teaspoons of sugar in one can! They are loaded with artificial sweeteners, preservatives, colourants, flavourants and caffeine! They lead to obesity, tooth decay, osteoporosis and heart disease. You don’t have to be a scientist to realise why to eliminate these from your diet, and yesterday!
Soya is not a complete protein as it lacks 2 of the 8 essential amino acids. Soy isoflavones are phyto-endocrine disrupters and can prevent ovulation and stimulate the growth of cancer cells – eating only 30g per day can result in hypothyroidism and make one feel lethargic, constipated, fatigued and can cause weight gain!
Alcohol is toxic to the liver. Alcohol strips the body of its precious antioxidants. The more you have the more antioxidants you need to recover and reverse the effects. Alcohol really dehydrates the body and it destroys precious nutrients and bacteria in the body, causing serious disease like cancer later on. Particularly avoid alcohol after colonic irrigation as you will be more prone to retoxining or getting drunk quicker.
Bad Fats
Going back to the part about your pH – one of the worst acidifiers are things called hydronated fats or trans-fats.
These fats are designed to be stable at room temperature and introduced to increase the shelf life of many products on our shelves. You find these in many deep-fried or processed foods. In this article we look at a conference to discuss human detox held by world leaders in medicine and research to examine some of their findings on the health of the human and the importance of detoxingSeveral authors of popular books on chemical contamination, environmental illness and drug abuse were present at the conference. These included (from left) Joan Corbet-Dyne, contributing author to The Green Shalom Handbook; John Duff, co-author of The Truth About Drugs and the upcoming Ending Addiction; Doris Rapp, M.D., author of several books on environmental illness, including Allergies and the Hyperactive Child; Marion Moses, M.D., director of the Pesticide Education Center and author of Designer Poisons; and R. Michael Wisner, co-author, with conference panelist David Steinman, of the recently published Living Healthy in a Toxic World. 

Dr. Shields began her remarks with a discussion of the extent of chemical proliferation, observing that over four million man-made chemical compounds have been identified since 1965. More than 70,000 compounds are in current production, with 6,000 new compounds identified each week. In addition, at least 3,000 man-made chemicals are added to food. Added to this are illicit drugs, over-the-counter pharmaceuticals
and prescription medicine. Many of these xenobiotics”—chemical substances foreign to living organisms—accumulate in the human body. At least 400 foreign compounds have
been identified in human tissues. The National Human Adipose Tissue Survey (NHATS), a program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency analyzes adipose (fat) tissues in cadavers from around the country. NHATS, 100 percent of Americans have xylene, styrene and other known carcinogens in their fat. If xenobiotics were merely stored, inert, there might not be a problem. However,
Dr. Shields related that there is ample evidence that they can be “mobilized” and released from fat
stores. Even at low levels they can cause a variety of mental and physical effects. Mobilization may occur as a result of fasting, exercise, stress or heat. Moreover, toxicological evaluations of
individual toxic chemicals do not account for the fact that there may be hundreds or even thousands of compounds and metabolites within the adipose tissue of any given individual. These may interact, with wide-ranging effects.
